Dutch auctions for Shopify
Dutch Auctions for Shopify
A shopper likes the piece you’re showing, but is waiting for the right price. The next drop is close. They can wait, but someone else may claim it first.
A Dutch auction starts at a price you set and falls in timed steps. Shoppers accept the current price to claim the item. With Stores on Live, you can run that sale on your Shopify storefront while you present the product and answer questions.

From $100 to a claim at $70
Start an item at $100 and set a $15 drop every 30 seconds, with a $55 floor. The price moves to $85, then $70. If a shopper claims it at $70, the auction stops there. The winner then completes Shopify checkout.
Waiting could mean a lower price. It also leaves time for another shopper to act. Each price drop gives the room a new decision without asking buyers to place a higher bid.
Set the lowest price before the auction starts
You choose the starting price, floor price, drop amount and time between drops. The floor is the lowest price the auction can reach. Choose it with your product costs and margin in mind.
The price stays at the floor for one final interval. If nobody claims the item before the auction ends, it remains unsold. Reaching the floor does not create an order or select a buyer.
Keep showing the product as the price changes
For a vintage jacket, use the time to show the lining, explain the fit and answer a question about its condition. Shoppers can judge the piece while deciding whether to accept the current price.
The competition comes from the chance that someone else will claim first. Your part is to give people enough detail to make that decision. A clear demonstration matters as much as the price on screen.
Dutch auctions and rising bids
In an English auction, shoppers compete by raising their bids. In a Dutch auction, the price falls until someone accepts it. The buyer chooses a moment to act instead of responding to each competing bid.
Use the format that fits the item and the way you want to sell it. A Dutch auction lets you test what someone will accept within the price range you chose, without letting the price fall below your floor.
A claim comes before payment
The first valid acceptance secures the item at the accepted price. The winner follows a private Shopify checkout path to complete the purchase. Claiming does not charge them automatically, and shipping and tax are additional where applicable.
When reviewing a show, look at how many items were claimed, the prices they reached and how many claims became paid orders. Those measures help you decide whether to change the starting price, drop size or pace for the next event.
